6 MILES, 5KM, AND A FANCY DINNER
By Jon on May 18, 2008
So this was a pretty full weekend for me. It started with a Warriors' Night for all Sgt and below in my unit. We humped around MCAS Iwakuni before having a field mess night, followed by hanging out by a bonfire and just having an over all good time.
The hump would have been very enjoyable for me if I didn't run a good 3/4 of the way. Since I was shooting the event, I would get to a good spot and shoot the squadron as they passed by, then I would have to run ahead of them all to get to another good spot and do that all over again. However everyone seemed to be smiling and having a good time and I will admit I had a good time. I was taking pictures, why would I not have a good time.
Right after the hump we had a field mess night. They can be alot of fun and it started out pretty rough since next to no one had been to a mess night and they were getting fined for not reporting correctly. The night ended up a success, due highly to sumo wrestling outfits, the CO and XO having a sumo match, and eventually the rules pretty much went out the window and we enjoyed ourselves. I do hope the younger Marines get to have a true mess night so they can experience one.
They next morning a group of us(John, Jacob, Jen, Marcos, and myself) all went to Hiroshima to visit Peace Park, the place where the atom bomb was dropped. If you EVER get the chance to visit, I would highly recommend it. The experience is amazing and can not be given enough credit by mere words. Seeing grown men cry, watching small children try to touch the burned and melted toys, clothes, and other artifacts they have in the museum is beyond words, beyond photographs. You can only feel it.
Next weekend, hopefully on Friday, I will be making my way to Miya Jima and maybe Hiroshima again Friday afternoon or Saturday evening for more photography. Keep an eye out and I hope you enjoy what I have just put up!
